Blocked Drains
Slow sinks, showers and floor wastes cleared and put right, with the real cause found rather than just punched through, so the fix actually holds: see the blocked drains page.
Drainage work across Teneriffe is Plumber Teneriffe territory: blocked drains, sewer chokes, stormwater overflows and CCTV drain inspections, on some of the oldest lines in the suburb. Our plumbers clear and repair them every week.
If we're late, $100 comes off your bill

Match the symptom to the job before you call, since each one needs a different repair and a different price:
a blocked drain somewhere in your own waste line, the most common call we take.
a blocked sewer, which may sit in a stack your whole building shares.
stormwater blockage, because this flat offers no outlet and water can only head toward a basement.
a CCTV drain inspection, so the next fix is based on what is actually in the pipe.

Drainage in this suburb is a tale of two pieces of ground, and most blockages trace back to that shape.
The hill rises hard off the river flat, so hillside lines carry stormwater down quickly, then lose their gradient on the low ground. Silt and paper drop out where the grade eases, which is why chokes cluster near the bottom.
The flat is alluvial silt and river deposits, the same ground that needed deep piers under at least one river-frontage woolstore. Groundwater sits close to the surface, so subsoil drains and sumps work through every wet spell.
Stormwater drainage first reached Florence and Ethel streets back in 1904, and a 1908 loan aimed to complete the suburb's remaining drains before 1910. Much of it has been in the ground for over a hundred years.

Slow sinks, showers and floor wastes cleared and put right, with the real cause found rather than just punched through, so the fix actually holds: see the blocked drains page.

Gurgling toilets, sewage smells and overflow from a floor waste point to the sewer line, and we establish whose pipe the choke sits in first: see the blocked sewer page.

Downpipes, pits and yard drains overflowing in a downpour, with low riverside ground giving the surplus nowhere to run except the nearest doorway or pit: see the blocked stormwater page.

A camera run shows what is down there, whether roots, grease, a collapsed section or a sag, turning a recurring blockage into a scoped repair: see the CCTV inspections page.
$0 call-out fees, available 24/7, and same-day where we can.

A drain that keeps blocking is a symptom, and the diagnosis comes before any digging:
One slow fixture points to a branch; several at once point to the main line or a shared stack.
An inspection shows the fault, its depth and its exact position, which turns a mystery into a scoped repair.
Alluvial soil on the flat moves and settles, so pipes there can sag and hold water even when nothing is blocking them.
Grease from the cafes at street level, silt off the hill and root invasion each need a different fix, and the camera tells us which we have.
Trees matter less here than in leafy suburbs, but the old joints still let fine roots in. A diagnosis that skips the camera usually means the same choke back next season.

The storm season shapes most of the drainage calls we take here, and the ground decides where the water ends up.
Rainfall averages about 1010 millimetres a year, and the November to March storms deliver much of it in short, heavy falls straight onto the hill and the flat below.
The drains were sized for woolstores and a handful of houses. They now take water off apartment paving, laneways and everything the hill sheds, so a pit that coped in 1910 surcharges in a summer cloudburst.
When the old lines overflow, water collects along Commercial Road and the back lanes off it, hunting the lowest opening it can find. Council's historic flood layers show 1974 water over Helen and Wyandra streets, Skyring Terrace and sections of Commercial Road, while the 2011 and 2022 events stopped sooner. Ground-floor homes in that pocket keep pumps and shut-offs ready.
Overland flow paths on council's maps also run through the riverside end of Commercial Road and Vernon Terrace, and through the Dath, Helen and Wyandra street pocket, so those pits spill first in a downpour.

Drainage work lives or dies on the diagnosis, and a team that knows these old lines earns its keep there. For taps, toilets, leaks and gas, the general plumbing services page covers those jobs, and water pouring or a gas smell belongs on the emergency page.

The public sewer and mains out in the street sit with Urban Utilities; anything on your side of that connection, your building's branch included, is the owner's responsibility.
Water comes off the hill at speed and slows where the line levels out near the river, so silt and paper settle out exactly where the old pipes ease off.
Yes, a camera run shows the open joints and fine root threads typical of the old earthenware branches still serving hill houses, so we know whether to clear or replace.
It often plays a part, because cafe grease shares pipes with the apartment stacks above it, so a choke builds slowly and reveals itself in a unit downstairs first.
Yes, those two streets have been drained since 1904, and the same lines now carry run-off from paved apartment blocks that the original drainage scheme was never sized to handle during heavy rain.
